iPhone War Driving

John Gruber has a list of ESSID's discovered by his iPhone while walking to the grocery store. This has been a constant source of amusement for me. Some of the names of people's access points are hilarious! Although, I think his "breasts" access point is the best one I've seen so far.

Well, it's been a little while. Chewy had his blogging privileges revoked until he starts brushing his teeth.. Things have been happening here with the usual speed and alacrity. The big news of this week was the iPhone release, which everyone has been talking about, but I thought I'd add my two cents, just because I can.

People have been hating on the choice that Apple made in supporting EDGE and not supporting some 3G network. I never really cared for the "smart-phone" concept of being a mini-computer and needing to have fast access so I could SSH from my phone into work. EDGE is really all that I need, so far, for doing quick maps and for downloading email. Although I keep a fastidious in-box, so others with more mail in their inbox may care more. And generally, when I need a map, I'm not necessarily going to be somewhere where a 3G signal would get to me.

Overall, I'm delighted with it! My one gripe is that I wish Apple hadn't done such a good job of marketing it. I can hardly bring it out in public without everyone wanting to touch it.
